Chair of Local Advisory Committee Vacancy

Would you like to make a difference to the lives of young people with autism?

Prosper Learning Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and committed volunteer for the position of Chair for the Local Advisory Committee (Governors) of Thomas Bewick School. 

As a member of the LAC, you will help shape the strategic direction of our specialist school, supporting children and young people with an Autism Spectrum Condition diagnosis to achieve their full potential.

What does the Local Advisory Committee do?

The LAC plays a vital role in ensuring the school is well led and provides the highest standards of education. Its three core functions are:

• Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
• Holding school leaders to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
• Overseeing financial performance and ensuring resources are used effectively and responsibly

What will you do?

As Chair of the LAC, you will:

• Lead the LAC to provide support and challenge to school leaders
• Meet with the Headteacher regularly and participate in their appraisal
• Chair committee meetings and lead the committee in school visits and other governance activities
• Work with Trustees to help develop and maintain the Trust and school strategic priorities
• Monitor progress against the Academy Development Plan and maintain the Risk Register
• Review information relating to pupil outcomes, attendance, behaviour, safeguarding and finance
• Lead a panel to review suspensions, exclusions and complaints if required

What is the time commitment?

The full Local Advisory Committee meets three times each year. Members are also expected to:

• Visit the school to support monitoring activities
• Attend school events where possible
• Undertake relevant governance training and development

Who are we looking for?

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, professions and experiences. Some governance experience would be preferred however full training and support will be provided.

We are particularly keen to hear from individuals who can bring diverse perspectives, skills and lived experiences to strengthen the work of the committee.
