Thomas Bewick School

Thomas Bewick School is an all age (3-19 years) specialist school for autistic children and young people. All pupils have an Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) diagnosis and all pupils have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).  Our Nursery is an ‘Assessment Nursery’ and all children who access this provision are undergoing EHCP assessment.

The school has a fantastic reputation for providing high quality ASC specific education, training and support and is committed to its vision of being seen as a ‘centre of excellence’ within the field.

The school is arranged as follows over three different sites

• Thomas Bewick Site 1 (West Denton) – classes of mainly primary aged pupils
• Thomas Bewick Site 2 (West Denton) – close to Site 1 and accessed via the Studio West Academy site, this site has classes for secondary aged pupils and our Post-16 pupils
• Thomas Bewick @ Broadwood (Denton Burn) – our early years classes, located on the same site as Broadwood Primary School, and a short drive away from Site 1 and Site 2

All of our sites, classrooms and learning spaces have been designed with the autistic learner in mind to ensure that our pupils have access to an ASC specific environment with a range of specialist facilities and activities available to support different aspects of their learning and development. Our relevant, exciting and challenging curriculum is taught and supported by a dedicated team of caring and friendly staff who are trained in a range of ASC specific approaches and strategies.

Our school motto is ‘Growth Through Understanding’ – a multi-directional process that underpins everything we do. We believe that ‘growth’ occurs when each pupil is seen as an individual and when their own unique skills, interests and talents are nurtured, but we also believe that other members of our school community can learn and ‘grow’ from each other too. We have a shared commitment to providing the best possible learning opportunities and support for each and every pupil, their families and our staff.
